What are the industry standards for road bike components?

It seems that there is a large community of roadies online (bike forums, road bike review). Just for fun, I wonder what brand to choose the majority of people as for their bike-building, online reviews, etc. (no personal bias) from From what I've seen: Giro Helmet Specialized / Fizik Saddles Cinelli handlebar tape bicycle rim strip Continental Tire GatorSkin Zipp wheelsets Thomson seatpost Other suggestions? Opposing views? I am building a bike for the next summer, so it will be nice to know what to watch out for. I think it comes to personal Preferences, but I think I would like to know out of curiosity and not for me. Any type of cycling has certain name brands they trust. For example, the Fizik Arione has had enough popularity to have "clones" on the market (nashbar GR2, Forte RS1, Douglas Apex, Sette Sonic).

Do not confuse "standards" with "popular." There are really no standards, but only a selection for different applications. Building a bike is a good way to go if you: (a) must a custom border, (b) have a range of components on hand, or (c) have a plan for the perfect bike and do not mind because the significantly higher You spec'ing build your own. Otherwise, it is better to only a few desirable to make upgrades to an off-the-peg bike. Also, you should specify what you really intended use. Bikes come in many forms, including touring bikes, recreational riders and drivers. Giro vs. Bell vs. others. Choice does not depend on comfort first, everyone has a head fit well in a Giro will. Now, depending on what exactly your head and your wallet. Helmets must be replaced regularly, so it is not as if you would put with the same helmet for years. Saddles are in the same way. Do not place out $ 150 for a saddle, if you know it you or the agent You can adjust exchange for a different saddle, if you discover that you never comfortable in the first election. Fizik are very popular, and so are Specialized and Selle Italia. Bar Tape is a consumable item. No one really cares. Simply replace before it looks terrible. Fizik Deda and are worth a try. I do not think that has something about Cinelli the cheaper store-branded handlebar tape. It's Velox rim tape. For rim tape, you basically have the choice of fabric or plastic. Cloth protects the hose just fine. Velox is cloth. Some people spoke about the use of plug openings, the advantage is that you do not exclude the rim tape, if you replace a spoke to. GatorSkin do not go on Zipp wheels. Apples and broccoli. Thompson Seatposts. If you want to, aluminum, Thompson is a good, lightweight product. If you want carbon must You go anywhere else.
